(1886-1950) Army & Air Force Officer. In April 1911 he joined the aeronautical division of the Signal Corps and in June of that year gained his pilot’s certificate after being taught to fly by Orville Wright. In September 1911, he flew the first U.S. Air Mail and on June 12, 1912 he set the world altitude record of 6540 feet. In October 1912 he won the First Mackay Trophy for aviation winning a second time in 1934. He went on to have a very sucessful military career. In June 1944 he became one of four Army officers promoted to Five Star General rank. This item has a signature that has been single matted with a b/w shot. It measures 8.5x11.
